The criminal (Robert Hossein), who is modeled after American gangster John Dillinger, is pursued by the inspector (Charles Aznavour), a childhood buddy. The killer is apprehended using a combination of gunplay and psychology. Stella, his lover, is his only source of tenderness (Virna Lisi). During a gunfight with the cops, Dillinger is cornered and kills several innocent people in the crowd.
