Lights Out was a highly popular American radio system, an example of a system show devoted mostly to terror and the supernatural, pre-dating Suspense and Inner Sanctum. Versions of Lights Out aired at various times, on different networks, from January 1934 and the show finally made the transition into tv.
NBC Television attracted Lights outside to television in a set of four specials, produced and broadcast. NBC asked Cooper to produce the script for the premiere,"First Person Singular", which will be told entirely from the perspective of an unseen murderer who kills his outspoken wife and winds up being executed. Variety gave this first installment a rave review ("undoubtedly among the best dramatic shows yet found on a tv series"), however, Lights outdid become a routine NBC-TV series until 1949.
