Stewart Paylor is supposed to be providing chapters of his new book following the publication of his very successful debut novel, The Luminaries. Stewart is suffering from writer's block and has not produced a single word, despite the fact that everyone around him, including Cynthia, his literary agent/girlfriend, is aware of this. When he returns home after a trip, he discovers that a homeless mother, Cassandra, and her two children, 12-year-old Jake and 9-year-old Vera, have been squatting in his house since they have nowhere else to go.
