Conservatives attack Harrison MacWhite's Senate nomination hearing to become ambassador to Sarkan, a country in Southeast Asia where civil strife threatens to disrupt a fragile peace. Despite his expertise, MacWhite perceives only a contrast between America and Communism. He can't understand anti-American feeling as a desire for independence and nationalism.
