As the Allied forces approach Paris in August 1944, German Colonel Von Waldheim is distressed to take all France's greatest paintings. He manages to secure a train to transport the art works that are valuable as they are descended upon by retreat's madness. From stealing their national treasures, the resistance yet wants to avoid them but have received orders out of London which they are not to be destroyed. Labiche, the station master, is tasked with making it all happen and monitoring the train but he is also part of a dwindling set of resistance fighters. Others and he point an elaborate ruse to hold the rail out of leaving French territory.
