During the 1848 California gold rush, Amelia reluctantly follows her husband's goal of moving west. He is killed by Indians as a result of his hasty decision to move ahead of the caravan, but Amelia survives. She is alone in a wilderness she has never wanted to see, and she has almost no survival skills or supplies.
