Nick Hart is an American artist who lives in Paris in the 1920s with other people who have moved there from other places. He spends most of his time drinking and talking to people in local cafes and bugging Libby Valentin, the owner of a gallery, to sell his paintings. He gets mixed up in Nathalie de Ville's plan to make three fake paintings with her money. This causes Hart to have several run-ins with Bertram Stone, an American rubber magnate who is married to Hart's ex-wife Rachel.
