On her twenty-first birthday, Beatriz married Henrique. Henrique, a naval officer, was often at sea for extended periods of time. Beatriz, who learned everything from plant verticality, took great care of their six children's roots ashore. My father, Jacinto (Hyacinth), dreamed of becoming a bird when he was a child.
