War continues to rage in the Crimea, and Jeanne learns that her beloved is a member of the Bolshevik party (when he kills her father). She's down to her last few dollars and has no choice but to return to Paris to take a job with her uncle. Not long later, her fiance Andreas goes to Toulon, France, to help organize the sailors. Khalibiev, a robber, traitor, and libertine who has designs on Jeanne. As a result of his plans, Jeanne and Andreas's naiveté, and a missing diamond, tragedy seems imminent for the couple.
