Edward Wilson, the only witness to his father's suicide and person in the Skull and Bones Society while students at Yale, is just really a morally upright son who values honor and discretion, qualities which help him to be screened for a career within the newly based OSS. His dedication to his work does not come with a price though, leading him to forfeit his loved ones and eventually his ideals.
