The New York doctor Abbie Polin (Crystal) had a heart attack, and so he flew to Los Angeles to see his father, Abe (King). Abe works in Hollywood as the "king of the extras." Many years ago, their relationship was very bad, and it has not been getting better. In this film, Henry Winkler directed his first movie. A lot of it was shot at the MGM Studios in Culver City, which is only a few miles from Hollywood. Lisa, the love interest in Abbie's life, also comes for a visit. Abe, who gets along with everyone but his son, also gets along well with everyone else, except Lisa. It starts to get hard for Abe to remember things, and he is diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. She wants to get Abe a speaking part in a movie before it's too late. He and his son become close over time.
