When it comes to advancing progressive ideas in their nation, Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria and his father, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, often find themselves at odds with one another. Rudolf rapidly gets the impression that he is a man who was born in the wrong era in a society that isn't aware of the need for social transformation. The Prince of Wales, who would go on to become King Edward VII of Great Britain, delivers some much-needed comic relief. By taking up a mistress in the form of Baroness Maria Vetsera, Rudolf is able to escape his loveless marriage to Princess Stéphanie. Their unexpected death in Mayerling, which was the hunting lodge owned by the imperial family, is shrouded in secrecy.
