Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko
Nikuko is a woman who is boisterous, jovial, dispersed, and passionate. She lives in an otherwise tranquil beach town in northern Japan. In addition to this, she is the only caretaker of her daughter Kikuko, who is 11 years old and is very different from her in many respects. Kikuko is a thoughtful young girl who tackles life in this sleepy harbor town with a systematic attitude. She has the appearance of a string bean and is quietly curious. Nikuko embarrasses Kikuko, as any mother of a preteen would, but Nikuko's fearless personality makes her especially well-known in a place where Kikuko herself wants nothing more than to just blend in. While Kikuko navigates the everyday social dramas of middle school, augmented with bits of magical realism from her ever-present imagination, a startling revelation from the pair's shared history threatens to disrupt the pair's fragile bond.
