Geoffrey 'Geoff'/'Boy' Wellum joins the RAF in May1940, believing that the RAF needs every man it can get to combat the Luftwaffe. At the age of18, he becomes the youngest ever Spitfire pilot. Soon after, he forms strong ties with the other pilots in his unit, thanks to the rigorous training he received. While there is a lot of risk in the air, there is a lot of comfort on the ground, thanks to drinks, sports, and girls, in Geoff's case, Sarah. His tour of duty is completed after 18 months, but not before the casualties have inflicted a punishing toll on his psychological well being.
