To learn why a Bay Area art-world iconoclast named Harry Kierk wishes to trash a lifetime's worth of his own work, Yisroel "Izzy" Jonigkeyt, a Chassidic Jew from Crown Heights, travels to San Francisco to visit his Polish-born Catholic buddy Marek Wisniewski. During the visit, Izzy and Marek discover for the first time how intricate historical baggage affects their strange bond, and why Kierk is driven to ruin. Confrontations with Marek's anti-Semitic cousin Irek (their only link to Kierk) exacerbate tensions.
