Joseph Svenden, 47, lives on his family's farm with his ailing mother and works as a teacher at a two-room schoolhouse with Rosealee, his sweetheart and the widow of his best buddy's best friend. After learning that his teaching position will be eliminated at the end of the school year due to the school district's expansion into his town, Joseph, who does not have a college degree, becomes depressed. He is tempted by Catherine, a 17-year-old new student in his class, while this is going on. Joseph's affair with Catherine, along with the loss of his teaching position, compels him to take a hard look at his formerly mundane existence and decide how he wants to spend the remainder of his days.
