The First World War interrupts the love tale of sixteen-year-old Arturs. After losing his mother and his home, he seeks solace in joining the army, as this is the first time national battalions are permitted in the Russian Empire. But battle is nothing as Arturs thought it to be - there is no glory, no fairness. It's terrible and agonizing. Arturs is now utterly alone after his father and brother are killed in battle. Furthermore, no progress has been made toward the promised rapid settlement of the war and timely return home. Arturs finds strength for the final struggle and eventually goes home to restart everything, much like his newly created country.
